Crassula ovata 'Minor'

Crassula ovata 'Minor' is a smaller jade plant with fleshy leaves and dense branching stems. The glossy green leaves grow in pairs, and the stems become more woody-looking as the plant matures. In strong light, the leaf edges can develop a warmer tint while the main leaf surface stays green.

Crassula ovata comes from south-eastern Mozambique to the south-eastern Cape Province, where it grows as a succulent shrub. The name 'Minor' refers to the smaller scale of this jade plant. In a bright window and gritty mix, the stems stay shorter and the leaves stay firm when the pot dries well between waterings.

Compact jade growth

  • Compact jade plant with smaller rounded leaves
  • Thick branching stems that become woody-looking gradually
  • Glossy green leaves, sometimes with warmer edges in strong light
  • Slow, compact growth in pots
  • Prefers a bright window and a gritty succulent mix

Growth in pots

Crassula ovata belongs to Crassulaceae. The species stores water in thick leaves and stems, which allows it to handle dry intervals. Indoors, this smaller jade stays compact in strong light and a potting mix that dries well between waterings. This helps the leaves stay firm and the stems stay shorter.

Older stems thicken gradually and form a small branching shape. New shoots are softer and greener at first, then firm up as they mature. Keep it close to a bright window to prevent stretched stems.

Crassula ovata 'Minor' care

  • Light: Give very bright light with direct sun where possible. Increase sun exposure gradually after transport or darker winter months.
  • Watering: Water deeply, then let the substrate dry well before watering again. Reduce watering in cooler, darker periods.
  • Substrate: Use a fast-draining succulent mix with plenty of mineral material. The roots need air, so use an open mix that dries well.
  • Pot choice: Use a pot with drainage holes. Shallow or moderately snug pots suit compact growth.
  • Temperature: Keep frost-free and ideally above 10 °C.
  • Humidity: Low to average indoor humidity suits Crassula ovata 'Minor'. Keep the foliage dry between cleanings.
  • Feeding: Use diluted succulent fertiliser during active growth only. Light feeding keeps growth steadier than strong doses.
  • Pruning: Pinch or prune during active growth to shape the crown and encourage branching.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings root reliably after callusing. Leaf cuttings can also root, but they develop more slowly.

Small jade problem signs

  • Wrinkled leaves: Check substrate dryness and root health. If the roots are healthy and the mix is dry, water normally. If roots are damaged, let the plant recover in a drier mix first.
  • Yellow, soft or translucent leaves: Usually caused by too much water or compact wet substrate.
  • Leaning growth: Rotate the pot and increase light gradually.
  • Mealybugs or scale: Inspect leaf pairs, stem joints and the woody base.

Pet safety

Crassula ovata is harmful to cats and dogs if ingested. Keep Crassula ovata 'Minor' out of reach of pets and small children.

About Crassula ovata

Crassula comes from Latin crassus, meaning thick, referring to the fleshy leaves and stems. Ovata means egg-shaped, describing the typical leaf shape of the species.

One-and-done treat for giant breeds (our 186lb foster approves)
Flavor Name: Pig Ears, Size: 12 Count (Pack of 1), Flavor Name: Pig Ears, Size: 12 Count (Pack of 1)
We foster a 186lb Saint Bernard, and finding treats that actually satisfy her without requiring half the bag has been a challenge. These pig ears? Game changer. What makes these work: - ONE ear = one satisfied dog (compared to other treats where the bag says “35 per day” and she’d still beg for more) - Keeps her busy for about 5 minutes of focused chewing - She does a little excited dance when she sees the bag—can’t even sit, just wiggles - Zero crumbs or mess because she devours every single bit, then spends the next hour sniffing around hoping another one appears - She immediately grabs it and heads to her favorite bed to settle in—doesn’t move until it’s gone The only “issue”: There’s a bit of oil/greasiness when handling them, but nothing a quick hand wash can’t fix (Mrs. Meyer’s Cucumber soap works great, just saying). Bottom line: If you have a giant breed and you’re tired of buying treats that require multiple servings or disappear in one bite, these are it. One ear, complete satisfaction, Subscribe & Save so they just show up like a present you forgot you ordered. Our girl Ellie gives them 186 pounds of approval.

Size of Ears is Inconsistent
Flavor Name: Pig Ears, Size: 12 Count (Pack of 1)
A bit disappointing with the size, 1 large pig ear, the rest small and not actual whole pig ears. But Doggo enjoys them. No problems with digestion for him.

Just what the pet parent ordered
Flavor Name: Pig Ears, Size: 12 Count (Pack of 1)
As a furbaby parent of 2 huskies who are chewers in their first 3 yrs of their life, this product helps a lot. Very healthy, dogs love them, safe, and chewy. Definitely a winner. Love the price for my pockets. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed and your pup will thank you too.

Smell of plastic
Flavor Name: Pig Ears, Size: 12 Count (Pack of 1)
These had a very off-putting smell right out of the bag - each one smelled like plastic, almost as if they’d been sitting in the packaging for too long. My dog wouldn’t touch them at all, which says everything. Would not purchase again.

AWESOME HEALTHY DENTAL TREATS for any dog.
Pattern Name: Half Ears (40-pack)
THESE ARE AWESOME!! Though I need to cut these pig ears with an industrial pair of sheers (cutting scissors), my three 6 lb Chihuahuas LOVE these treats. It also keeps them busy chewing so daddy can get some work done. They are most importantly great for cleaning my dogs tiny Chihuahua teeth. 😁😉. These are a MUST BUY for anyone seeking a healthy, affordable, teeth-cleaning option for any size dog.
